Artistic Director Search

After thirty-five years as Artistic Director of the Lexington Chamber Chorale, Dr Gary Anderson has announced his retirement, effective at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season in June. The search is now underway to find a new Artistic Director for the Chorale who will continue and build upon the excellence of the past thirty-five years.

The Lexington Chamber Chorale (LCC) is an auditioned, professional SATB ensemble of thirty voices that presents four concerts each year. The Chorale currently rehearses and performs at Second Presbyterian Church, offering a varied repertoire that challenges the director, singers, and audience to explore a broad spectrum of musical experience. Through the years LCC has partnered with a variety of individuals and groups in the arts community including the Lexington Philharmonic; Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra; Kentucky State University Concert Choir; Allegro Dance Studio; renowned percussionist, composer, and clinician Anders Astrand; and Grammy Award winning hip-hop artist, Devine Carama.

Job Description: Artistic Director

The mission of the Lexington Chamber Chorale (LCC) is to enhance the arts in Lexington and the Bluegrass Region through outreach with a rich and varied choral repertoire presented by professional singers to an appreciative and diverse audience. 

Job Title: Artistic Director 

Position: 

  • Part time at will position 
  • Reports to the Board of Directors 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee all aspects of LCC ‘s music program:
    • Developing a comprehensive artistic plan that provides basis for budget for concert season 
    • Selecting a seasonal LCC calendar for rehearsals, performances, and other events as needed 
    • Planning concerts, including selecting repertoire for each concert 
    • Coordinating with other staff and Board of Directors to determine logistics, venue, and production details 
    • Obtaining music for singers and other musicians as needed 
    • Recruiting and hiring musicians to accompany Chorale as needed 
  • Develop, maintain, and lead a professional choral ensemble of the highest quality:
    • Recruiting, auditioning, and selecting qualified professional singers for the Chorale 
    • Prepare for rehearsals and performances 
  • Serve as the principal conductor of the LCC and select and collaborate with guest conductors as needed
  • Administrative duties include the following:
    • Serving as the principal LCC representative in the community 
    • Attending, updating, and reporting at LCC Executive Committee and Board of Directors Meetings 
    • Collaborating with the LCC Board of Directors on general policies statements, goals, and objectives 
    • Collaborating with Board of Directors to maintain LCC’s financial stability
    • Demonstrating disciplined financial stewardship 
    • Collaborating with Operations Manager and Marketing Director 

Requisite Skills: 

  • Ability and willingness to foster a sense of community within the Chorale 
  • Ability to lead and conduct performers in vocal technique and choral repertoire
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively with the LCC Board of Directors and performers 
  • Ability and willingness to represent the organization with funding agencies, donors, and supporters  

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in music required. Graduate degree or equivalent experience preferred 
  • Extensive experience in leading professional choirs and conducting choral repertoire
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills 
  • Experience in creating and implementing a strong artistic vision
